A message from our President

Welcome to the Whitehall Bowling Club website.

I often find it helpful to think metaphorically when looking at any process.  Our Club is like a valuable timepiece – every cog has to work in harmony in order that the works create the drive to keep up with the passing of time What part do you play as a Club Member?  Your Committee needs your help so please think about this and offer to do a little – a job shared is a job halved 

May I again offer our thanks to Helen for her hard work, commitment and clear leadership she gave during her year as President. We are fortunate to have a beautiful setting to enjoy, both on and off the green, and take this opportunity to wish you all a good 2012 season and hope that the weather is kind.

Annual Fees

For 2012 are due for payment by Wednesday 29 February at the latest. For your convenience, payment of fees can be made in the Clubhouse on Tuesday 14 February from 7.00 p.m. to 9.00 p.m. Fees for 2012 will be as follows:

Ordinary Member                                   £85.00
Junior Member                                        £21.25
Limited Member                                     £30.00
Non-Playing Member                            £20.00
Medical Dispensation Member            £45.00
Social Member                                        £25.00
Visitors Fee (max 3 per season)         £  3.00

As agreed at the AGM on 29 January, a new fee has been introduced for 16-18 year olds – this will be 50% of the Ordinary Member fee so this will be £42.50 for 2012.

Retained Members

We still have several members showing as Retained although this category of membership was disbanded at the EGM in May 2011 and letters were issued asking for preference on revised status.  These members will be re-classified as Non-Playing Members.

About Whitehall Bowling Club

The Club was founded in 1885 by a group of local businessmen. At that time it was called The Whitehall Bowling, Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club. The croquet lawn eventually became a tennis court but in 1964 it was transformed into a car park. The  Club was then renamed the Whitehall Bowling Club. The Club is situated in the West End of Aberdeen surrounded by granite terraced houses.

The Club is affiliated to the Bon-Accord Bowling Association, the Aberdeen and District Ladies Bowling Association, the Scottish Bowling Association and the Scottish Women’s Bowling Association.

The membership totals 271. (136 male and 86 female)  10 junior members, 28 retained members, and 11 honorary members.

The Club encourages new members and has two qualified bowling coaches. Our coaches run regular coaching sessions throughout the outdoor bowling season teaching the rudiments and etiquette of the game.

Throughout the year the Club holds monthly social evenings. The club darts team competes in the Aberdeen Bowling Club league and there is a domino’s section as well as a group of Mahjong players who meet up each week in the winter months.

The Club holds fund-raising events for charity. In 2009 one of our members organized a competition in aid of Alzheimer's and raised £3500.

Another member has friends working in Kyrgyzstan and holds events to raise funds for their cause. In 1998 Ian Schuback (Australia) - who was partnered with Scotland’s Hugh Duff - won the Tournament but then donated his winners cheque to Cancer Support in Aberdeen which was being supported by the Club at that time.

 The Whitehall Tournament


Updates for the 2012 Tournament will follow in a few weeks.

Whitehall Bowling Club has hosted an annual Invitations Pairs Tournament since 1974. The 2011 event will be its 38th year. The final stages will be held on Friday 8 July, and all day Saturday 9 July. Qualifying days are: Saturday 25th June for Ladies (all day) and, Saturday 2nd July for Men (all day).

The key objectives of the Tournament remain, which is to bring international bowlers to Aberdeen to compete against our areas top bowlers. 

Although the general approach to this annual event has been adopted by many, we believe it is commonly accepted that the Whitehall Tournament is hard to match, let alone surpass. That is because we strive to improve it year on year.

International bowlers receive invitations to participate in the latter stages of the event, and  the event has had television coverage on one or two occasions, the last being in 1998 – its twenty-fifth anniversary.On that occasion the Tournament had 14 international players from Scotland, England, Wales, Ireland, Jersey and Australia. Six of these were world Champions.
