Special thanks to all our Tournament sponsors once again! If you have the need for the services they provide, please give them the first opportunity to offer you their first class service. Their support helps us provide the bulk of the funds necessary to run this prestigious event year on year
A message from our President

Welcome to the Whitehall Bowling Club website.

I consider it a great honour and privilege to have been elected President of Whitehall Bowling Club. I am preparing myself for a busy few months, but at the same time I am looking forward to what is likely to be a year of challenges both on and off the green at Whitehall. The new committee will work together to ensure that Whitehall continues to be one of the leading clubs in the North East.

Last year was a season of great celebrations for our 125th anniversary and there were many opportunities to celebrate this historic milestone. It gave us all the chance to experience the warm friendship from our fellow bowlers from local clubs, and including those from further afield.
On behalf of all club members I congratulate Past President Eric Pirie for his tremendous effort in leading us through what was a very special year for us all. Our 126th year however, should be just as special to each of us as we continue to wear our blazers and badges with pride.

Sadly we have lost several of our members over the past few months. Each of us will retain our own memories of the many enjoyable times we shared with them at Whitehall, and I have conveyed our sympathies, thoughts, and best wishes to their families on behalf of all at Whitehall.

As Whitehall members, we each have an important part to play to ensure that our club continues to prosper and grow, and that we continue to create an environment for total enjoyment, be it for the social or competitive bowler, both within the club and at a higher level. The Committee is always grateful for willing helpers. Volunteers can contact George Fearn (Green and Gardens) and Ian Livingston (Bar duties).

Jennifer Fearn has resigned as social convenor. We are indebted to Jennifer for all her hard work, and the fun events she has organized for us over the years.
Let me know if you are willing to help with catering or you wish to organise an evening of entertainment at the club.

We are always on the lookout for ways of raising funds. (see Club News section) Do you have any bright ideas? If you have, get in touch with me, or by e-mailing your ideas to our Club Secretary: www.clubsec@whitehallbowling.com

Last year the new format of the Tournament was a great success thanks to the hard work of the organisers. They were grateful for all the help received from club members. We look forward to our Tournament this summer and welcoming back the Internationals and top local players.

The Gents Friday night League’s play a home and away game every Friday evening. Over the years this has become a social event with members coming along to give their support. Please come and join us. It’s a good Friday night out, and the players will enjoy your support!

We open the season with our annual fund raising  coffee morning on Sat 2 April 10am. Tickets are now on sale from Committee members.

The Green opens on Sat 16 April. Please join us to welcome our new members and celebrate the start of our 126th season

Finally, I wish you all a very happy and successful summer bowling season, and I will ensure that Whitehall Bowling Club continues to give a warm welcome to all.

Helen Weathers
Whitehall President 2011

About Whitehall Bowling Club

The Club was founded in 1885 by a group of local businessmen. At that time it was called The Whitehall Bowling, Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club.

The croquet lawn eventually became a tennis court but in 1964 it was transformed into a car park. The  Club was then renamed the Whitehall Bowling Club. The Club is situated in the West End of Aberdeen surrounded by granite terraced houses.

The Club is affiliated to the Bon-Accord Bowling Association, the Aberdeen and District Ladies Bowling Association, the Scottish Bowling Association and the Scottish Women’s Bowling Association.

The membership totals 271. (136 male and 86 female)  10 junior members, 28 retained members, and 11 honorary members.

The Club encourages new members and has two qualified bowling coaches. Our coaches run regular coaching sessions throughout the outdoor bowling season teaching the rudiments and etiquette of the game.

Throughout the year the Club holds monthly social evenings. The club darts team competes in the Aberdeen Bowling Club league and there is a domino’s section as well as a group of Mahjong players who meet up each week in the winter months.

The Club holds fund-raising events for charity. In 2009 one of our members organized a competition in aid of Alzheimer's and raised £3500.

Another member has friends working in Kyrgyzstan and holds events to raise funds for their cause. In 1998 Ian Schuback (Australia) - who was partnered with Scotland’s Hugh Duff - won the Tournament but then donated his winners cheque to Cancer Support in Aberdeen which was being supported by the Club at that time.

  The Whitehall Tournament

Whitehall Bowling Club has hosted an annual Invitations Pairs Tournament since 1974. The 2011 event will be its 38th year. The final stages will be held on Friday 8 July, and all day Saturday 9 July. Qualifying days are: Saturday 25th June for Ladies (all day) and, Saturday 2nd July for Men (all day).

The key objectives of the Tournament remain, which is to bring international bowlers to Aberdeen to compete against our areas top bowlers.
“After 37 years, the Whitehall Tournament remains one of the top Scottish Invitation bowling competitions. It has seen some of the best UK and international players participate. Also this annual event is still the one that most top bowlers want to play in.”  ... Jim Fowlie; Bowling Correspondent for Aberdeen Journals.

Although the general approach to this annual event has been adopted by many, we believe it is commonly accepted that the Whitehall Tournament is hard to match, let alone surpass. That is because we strive to improve it year on year.

International bowlers receive invitations to participate in the latter stages of the event, and  the event has had television coverage on one or two occasions, the last being in 1998 – its twenty-fifth anniversary.
On that occasion the Tournament had 14 international players from Scotland, England, Wales, Ireland, Jersey and Australia. Six of these were world Champions.

For 2011, 128  local club bowlers will again receive invites to compete in the Tournament. 48 of them will earn entry into the latter stages of the event by winning through the preliminary qualifying rounds.

The first prize for each of the Ladies and Men's events for 2011 will be £1,000 shared between each winning pair whilst £400 will be awarded to each of the runners-up pairings.
